A Jazzy Good Time: Anacortes Arts Festival

Since its inception in 1962, the Anacortes Arts Festival has grown from a small community event into a renowned showcase of artistic talent, attracting visitors from near and far. What began as a modest display of local art blossomed into a festival featuring a diverse array of artists, activities, performances, and creative opportunities. The commitment to fostering a love for the arts and supporting artists remained as strong as ever, and with the tradition, passion and dedication that has defined the festival for over six decades.

As my wife and I explored the festival, we found an eclectic selection of activities designed to engage and entertain visitors of all ages. There were some changes to the map this year, so we made sure to explore every corner of the festival to find our favorite artists, musicians, hangout areas, or tasty treats.

The fine art exhibition, located at the Depot Arts Center, featured the works of talented artists from across the Pacific Northwest. From paintings and sculptures to photography and mixed media, there was something to captivate every art enthusiast. We were well-rewarded for making our way slightly off the beaten path to the Depot.

Music was integral to the Anacortes Arts Festival experience. The two stages—Main Stage and Jazz Stage—offered a continuous lineup of live performances throughout the weekend. We enjoyed the sounds of talented local and regional entertainers as we soaked in the festive atmosphere. We preferred the jazz, but there was also the upbeat rhythms of folk, or the energetic beats of classic rock – the diverse lineup had something for everyone.

For the younger visitors, the festival’s Youth Area was a must-visit. With hands-on art projects, interactive performances, and fun activities, children could unleash their creativity and enjoy the festival in a way designed just for them. We also visited our next generation of artists at the Youth Art Booths, where meeting these young artists brought smiles to our faces.

As we strolled through the festival, we didn’t forget to visit the Working Studios, where we watched artists at work. From live painting and chainsaw carving to wood carving and metalworking, these demonstrations provided a fascinating glimpse into the creative process. We even picked up a few tips and techniques to try in our own artistic endeavors.

The Anacortes Arts Festival was more than just an event; it was a celebration of our community’s rich cultural heritage and a testament to the enduring power of art to bring people together. We are grateful for the support of the sponsors, and volunteers. Their enthusiasm and appreciation for the arts were what made the festival a success year after year.

If you missed it, hopefully you can catch it next year. I recommend this arts festival, as we have been to many throughout the state. We had a wonderful time exploring the artist booths, enjoying the performances, and creating lasting memories. Here’s to another fantastic year of celebrating art, community, and creativity!
